Determined not to let it get to her, Lena threw herself into her work. She took on extra projects, made plans with friends she'd neglected, and joined a book club. But the question lingered: what had she done wrong?
Max took a deep breath. "I was scared. I didn't know what I was getting into, and I didn't know how to back out gracefully."
"Max," she said, her voice steady.
She considered ignoring him, turning her back and pretending she didn't see. But her feet seemed to move of their own accord, carrying her toward him.
"And now?" she asked.
But then, silence.
